Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating disease that damages the protective covering of the nerve cells in the brain. This causes a disruption of communication between the brain and body, leading to a wide variety of symptoms. The result is a debilitating disease. Basically, one’s immune system attacks the central nervous system causing it not to work properly.
The disease gets its name due to damage of the myelin – the protective coating of the nerves. This, in turn, forms multiple areas of scar tissue or sclerosis. What are some common symptoms associated with MS?
- Extreme tiredness
- Vertigo – a false sensation of movement
- Sexual dysfunction
- Numbness and tingling
- Paralysis of the legs, one side of the body, or one limb
- No control over bodily movements
- Urinary dysfunction
- Sensory deficits
Obviously, this long list of symptoms greatly affects a person’s quality of life, leaving one frustrated and looking for answers.
Caring for Multiple Sclerosis
Prescription pharmaceuticals are often provided to care for an attack of MS. A variety of drugs may be used to treat the symptoms involved. Prednisone – a steroid that can reduce inflammation – may be included. However, this drug also hinders the immune system and can cause osteoporosis or cataracts. Another medication often prescribed is interferon. This closes off the body’s natural response. More and more people are looking for natural ways to care for multiple sclerosis. Is there anything out there that works?
Hope for MS Sufferers
A study was recently performed that showed an improvement in MS for chronic venous cerebrospinal insufficiency patients (those with obstructed blood flow in the veins that hinders the central nervous system) who received adjustments to the bones of the upper neck from an upper cervical chiropractor. By correcting a misalignment in this area, the obstruction can be removed, and the body can communicate at a much better level. This often reduces or even eliminates the symptoms associated with MS.
