Sports-related concussions are very common among children. Concussions are a mild traumatic brain injury that results in the function of the brain being disrupted temporarily. This actually changes the way the brain works. A person does not have to lose consciousness to have suffered a concussion. The actual symptoms may last for less than fifteen minutes, but have longer lasting repercussions if not corrected right away.
Caring for a Child After a Concussion Occurs
Here are some things to do if a person suspects that a child has suffered a concussion and to avoid future concussions:
- Take a break: The child should stop playing the game immediately and rest at this point. He should remain out of the game for the remainder of play so as not to make the injury any worse. He should not resume playing until all of his symptoms have gone away.
- Protection: It is vital to have the proper safety equipment for the game. It should be well maintained and fit properly.
- Avoid future concussions: Repeated concussions can add to the child’s problems by causing brain swelling, long-term disability, brain damage, and even death.
- Seek the care of an upper cervical chiropractor: A concussion can cause the upper bones of the neck to misalign. This can lead to a variety of health problems down the road. Seeking out the proper care can help the child to heal properly.
How Does Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care Help?
We focus our attention on making sure the top two bones of the vertebrae are in proper alignment. Many times, a blow to the head causes the bones to misalign. A misalignment of only ¼ of a millimeter can result in headaches and a number of other complaints. Even children need to keep their spines healthy, especially if they take part in sports.
Our adjustments are gentle. There is no popping or twisting of the spine. Once the misalignment is fixed, adults and children alike have reported a decrease in symptoms and an overall feeling of better health.
