Neck Ache, Back Ache, Pinched Nerve, Numbness, Tingling, Muscle Ache, TorticollisA link has repeatedly been seen between a misalignment in the upper neck and the conditions of torticollis and scoliosis, possibly due to trauma at birth. Dr. Gutmann has been researching this very subject since the 1960’s and published his research in 1987. It clearly reveals that upper neck problems create a variety of illnesses in children such as ear infections and colic, as well as torticollis.

Another doctor, Dr. Biederman, published further research in 1992. By combining the children observed with these two doctors, it amounts to over 1,000 babies who were studied. Dr. Biederman’s research once again linked misalignments of the neck to children having health problems. Birth trauma seems to be the most likely cause due to:

  • The mother giving birth while laying down rather than standing
  • Vacuum extraction
  • The use of forceps

Each of these can be trauma-inducing to the baby’s head and neck.

How Torticollis Causes Scoliosis

It has been observed that many children born with torticollis end up being diagnosed with scoliosis later in life. Scoliosis is more common than one may realize. Out of every 1,000 people, as many as 25 have some degree of curvature of the spine. One may be walking around with as much as a 15-degree spinal curve and not even be aware of it. One’s health can be significantly impacted at the 7 to 9-degree level. Often, this happens due to the head not being properly positioned over the body, leading to:

  • Changes in posture
  • Uneven hip alignment
  • Tilting of the head and shoulders
  • Leg imbalances

The end result for children in this situation is often scoliosis. What can be done to help?

Natural Care for Scoliosis and Torticollis

Here at our Anchorage, Alaska office, we help our patients to keep the spine properly aligned. We focus on the top bones of the neck, the C1 and C2 vertebrae, as these are most likely to misalign and have the greatest impact on overall health. The body compensates for these misalignments at the base of the skull by bending and twisting all the way down, leading to some of the above-mentioned problems. We can help realign these bones using a gentle, safe technique that will bring the body back into proper balance.
