The brainstem and the spinal cord are the communication highway of the body and brain. The pathway from the brain to the body is very narrow and runs through two small bones that are responsible for holding the head in proper position. These are the atlas and axis bones, the top two bones of the upper neck. If one of these bones becomes misaligned by as little as ¼ of a millimeter, the brainstem stops sending proper signals. This leads to a number of health problems.
A woman sought out the care of an upper cervical chiropractor after she fell and got a concussion. She had symptoms consistent with post-concussion syndrome, such as vertigo and frequent headaches. Her history showed that she had headaches before the fall, but they had increased in intensity and frequency after the fall. Her vertigo came on after the fall, as well.
She was examined by an upper cervical chiropractor, and it was found that she had an imbalance in her body due to the fact that one leg was shorter than the other. This happened because of her fall and a misalignment in her upper cervical spine.
After she had received her first adjustment, she reported that her vertigo and her headaches went away. An x-ray revealed that the alignment of her upper spine had improved. The following day she returned, and the chiropractor found that her legs had balanced, and her muscles spasms in her neck had decreased. In subsequent exams, two times a month, she continued to progress. She no longer had vertigo and even her headaches, that occurred before the accident, had gone away.
Why Upper Cervical Care?
The importance of having a healthy spine is clearly seen in this example. Some people choose to ignore their symptoms or try to cope with them, hoping they will go away. This woman chose to be pro-active and do something about her condition. In the end, she was glad she did as she was able to live a healthier and more fulfilling life.
